How to write perfect LOR? Academic LOR? How to write an academic LOR Sample?

The following points should always be addressed in an academic letter of recommendation from a university:

  • What are your name and designation? In which college do you teach?

Example: Mukti Anand, Assistant Professor, HMRITM

  • Since what year have you known the applicant? In what capacity have you supervised the applicant? (Projects/ presentations/ extra-curricular activities/ class)

Example: Since 2001. I evaluated her progress in class, examined her assignments, and assessed her in the half-yearly and final examinations. Also, I rated her final semester project (Semester VI in the year: 2004) and judged her in the class presentation on the same. As I am one of the heads of the core committee for organizing the festival called ‘mΓ©lange’, which is celebrated yearly in our institution, I could gauge her creative potential too. She was an active member of the drama, extempore speech, and photography teams and exhibited her talent in all these areas. We have intercollegiate competitions among these teams during the festival. She made a wonderful speech on a topic as bizarre as ‘Pepper’ in the extempore speech competition.

  • What courses did you teach the applicant? What were the applicant’s grades in these courses? What was the applicant’s rank in class in this/these course (s)?
Example: I taught her UNIX in IV Semester (2003), Computer Oriented Optimization Techniques in I Semester (2001), and Visual C ++ in Semester IV (Year: 2003). She scored the following grades; Computer Oriented Optimization Techniques (97%), Visual C ++ (93%), and Introduction to Information Technology (87%). She stood 1st in Computer Oriented Optimization Techniques in the class in Semester 1st (The year 2001)
and in Visual C ++ (2003) and second in Introduction to information technology (2001). In UNIX, she scored 76% which was fairly good and placed her in the top 10% for UNIX
papers in that semester.

  • List special achievements of the applicant’s academic life that you have observed. (You could mention awards/honors that your establishment might have given the applicant.) (Give dates.)
Examples:
● She was part of the drama team which stood second in an intercollegiate competition (2003).
● He was chosen as a representative from the university to present a poster based on his research in ‘Statistical entropy of a nuclear spectrometer vis-Γ -vis communication channel’ (Dec-2009)

  • Is there any specific occasion or incident that highlights the applicant’s strengths? Please give full details explaining the situation, the applicant’s contribution, and the outcome. Please list more than one incident if applicable. (Give dates.)
Example: In writing the paper, she was instrumental in helping me frame the research and the final content. Once the paper was written and approved, it was chosen by the faculty for a poster presentation at the esteemed organization of Bhaba Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in Mumbai. She stepped up to the challenge to represent the entire faculty and research in front of the BARC associates and this was no easy feat. As I had expected, she did the job marvelously well and satisfied all questions that the associates posed to her during the poster presentation

  • Was the applicant a member of any extra-curricular activities/ college society or forum? Give details about participation/achievements and team/leadership/communication / interpersonal skills. (Give dates.)

Example: He was a member of the Destiny Engraver group which was responsible for organizing annual cultural and technical festivals in the college (2014). He actively
participated in and organized various competitions such as Robo-war, Robo-race, and various types of quizzes, and was also a member of the college's cricket team. He has won many
achievements in inter-college cricket tournaments, Robo-race, Robo-war, and others (2014).

  • Discuss the applicant’s weaknesses. Elaborate on what the applicant has done to overcome them?

Example: Not comfortable working with unknown people. To overcome this challenge
she started working on projects with people from varied backgrounds to enable better
learning of how to deal with different personalities.

  • Please list projects in which the applicant participated (course related as well as training at organizations.) Are there any publications to the applicant’s credit? If yes, please give the name of the paper, publishing house, and year of publishing along with the source in which it was published. (books/ internet/ journal etc. (Give dates.)
  • Please list only those projects or paper presentations where you have observed the student directly.

Example:
● Project Submitted in the college in VI Semester (2004)
She submitted a project on the Automation of a Transport Enquiry System (Voice Based) in her MCA Final Semester Project which fully automates traditional inquiry systems at transport terminals like bus terminals. The project was interesting and succinct and used tools like ASP.NET and MS Speech Recognition software. She was required to hunt through a lot of advanced material in order to develop this unique project successfully.
Her keen interest in computational skills was quite evident in this project. It’s clear that
she is a student with an aptitude for research.
● Trainings (2002 - 2003)
She participated in, the "Communication Skills Training Program for EdCIL (India) Ltd"; on Communication Skills – Written, Verbal and Nonverbal which was successfully conducted by the Centre for Competency Development & Research. She was one of the participants who was highly invigorated and full of zeal & used to often make the sessions more interactive through questioning, or exchanging views with other classmates.
