Introduction: The Digital SAT is an electronic version of the traditional paper-based Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT), which is widely used for college admissions in the United States. It's designed to offer a more flexible and interactive testing experience for students.
Changes in Digital SAT:
What's NOT Changing:
- Score Validity: Scores remain valid for 5 years, just like the traditional SAT.
- Test Centers: The test is still conducted in authorized test centres, typically within schools.
- Sections: The test still consists of two portions: Verbal and Math.
- No Negative Marking: As before, there is no penalty for incorrect answers.
- Scoring: The scoring system remains out of 1600, with 800 for Verbal and 800 for Math.
- Sending Scores: Students can send scores to 4 universities for free.
- Registration Fee: There's no additional fee for taking the Digital SAT.
What's Changing:
- Test Format: The Digital SAT is taken on a computer, departing from the traditional paper-pencil format.
- Personal Devices: Students will use their own laptops, tablets, or school-managed Chromebooks for the test.
- Section Adaptiveness: The test will be section-adaptive, offering customized questions based on performance.
- Quick Score Availability: Scores for the Reading and Writing sections will be available immediately.
- Increased Test Frequency: Test dates have been expanded to March, May, June, August, October, November, and December.
- Reduced Test Duration: The test duration is shortened to 2 hours and 15 minutes, with a 10-minute break between the Verbal and Math sections.
Sectional Details:
Verbal:
- 2 sections with 27 questions each, to be completed in 32 minutes.
- Each question is based on a 100-150 word passage.
- No distinct categorization of Grammar and Reading Comprehension; each section combines questions.
- Introduces new topics and types of questions.
Math:
- 2 sections with 22 questions each, to be completed in 35 minutes.
- Both on-screen and physical calculators are allowed.
- No introduction of new topics or question types.
Device Requirements: Devices allowed include Windows laptops or tablets, Mac laptops, iPads, or school-managed Chromebooks. Minimum operating system versions and free space requirements apply.
Digital SAT Software Requirement: The Bluebook app must be downloaded and installed on the device, available at: https://bluebook.app.collegeboard.org/
Test Day Requirements: Mandatory items include a fully charged device with the Bluebook app, face covering (if required), an admission ticket, an acceptable photo ID, pencils/pens, and an acceptable calculator.
